Most ISO professionals say they’re not there to catch people out.
But they never reset the power dynamic out loud.
The phrase to use
“This isn’t a job performance review.”
And then add:
“You’re the expert at your job. I’m the expert in the standard. I need your help to understand how this really works.”
Why it works
It separates person from process.
It gives ownership back to them.
It positions you as curious, not corrective.
It replaces fear with contribution.
When people feel judged, they protect.
When people feel respected, they explain.
What to avoid
Acting like your position makes you superior.
Opening with “Show me…” in a tone that sounds instructional.
Letting silence create assumptions about blame.
That tension is subtle.
But it changes everything.
Say this instead
Pick one and use it naturally.
“This isn’t a job performance review. You’re the expert in what you do. I need your help to connect it to the standard.”
“This isn’t a job performance review. I’m here to understand how this operates in real life.”
“You know this process far better than I ever will. Help me see it properly.”
Translation:
I respect your competence.
I’m not here to grade you.
We’re examining the system together.
That’s not soft auditing.
That’s confident auditing.
That’s how you Lead the Standard.
